Kenneth Charles Steichen was born August 6, 1926 to John P. and Mary (Ewert) Steichen in Blaine Township, Jerauld County.
He attended the Steichen Country School for 8 years and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1944. On August 19, 1948, he married Joanne (Joey) Bratsberg in Woonsocket. He farmed with his father until 1954. They moved to their farm near Spencer, SD, where they farmed for 57 years and raised 5 children. In 2011, Kenneth and Joanne moved to Mitchell and became members of Holy Family Catholic Church. Kenneth’s love and devotion of family has been instilled in the hearts of his children and grandchildren to be passed on to future generations. He enjoyed dancing, traveling and his black angus cattle. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Farmer, SD, where he was also on the church council. He served on the Edgerton Township Board, Hanson County Zoning Board and was a member of the Moose Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Cancer Society.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Joanne; two sons: Jim (Jan) of Sunnyvale, CA, Dennis (Shelly) Steichen, of Raleigh, NC; three daughters: Kathy (Neil) Cauley of Excelsior, MN, Polly (Rod) Huber of Fulton, SD, Pam Olinger of Emery, SD; fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Rene Steichen of Fort Collins, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elmer, Dale, one sister, Lucille Goudy, two grandchildren and one son-in-law, Michael Olinger.
