Obituary

Leigh Anne Haisch was born January 20, 1917 at Platte, SD to John and Jessie (DeJong) De Haan.  She grew up in Platte and graduated from Platte, High School in 1934.  Following her graduation in 1938 from South Dakota State College, she started teaching at Hazel.  Later she taught at Thomas and then Watertown.  She was principal at Garfield Elementary School in Watertown.  After 33 years in education she retired.

On April 29, 1939 she married Ernest Luken at Watertown.  Ermest died August 20, 1977.  She married William Haisch on September 27, 1986.  They lived on a ranch near Bonesteel.  Following his death she moved to Mitchell. 

She was a member of First Reformed Church.  She was an active member of James Valley Community Center, was involved in the Love Feast program, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Cancer Walk and the Home Care Center. She loved bowling and was recognized as a lifetime member of the US Bowling Congress and a permanent member of the SD Bowling Association.

She is survived by her son, Karl (Lisa) Luken, Washington, GA;  daughter, Gail Lundberg, Jefferson City, MO; step-son, Thomas (Shirley) Haisch, Orlando, FL;  step-daughters, Sandi Cullen, Ashland, VA, Jeannie Applebee, Bonesteel, SD and Marilyn Lofflin, Yankton, SD; brother,  Lyle DeHaan, Platte, SD; sisters, Rose Paulson, Colome, SD and Ollie Anderson, Martinez, CA; seven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and fourteen step-grandchildren; and very special friends, Betty and Maynard Hieb.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, brothers, Andrew, Lawrence, Kenneth; sisters, Nellie Ludens and Lois Reimers; step-daughter, Rene.

Always had great respect for "Mrs. Luken", she was my teacher @ Thomas, a very excellent educator, so willing to help her students. Also opened her home to me so I could finish my high school education in Watertown for courses I needed. Gail and Karl, my sincere sympathy to you in your loss.
