Isabelle Marie Smith was born in Clayton SD to William and Anna (Drewitz) Jaton on June 16, 1922. She was their third child of ten. Isabelle was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Clayton, SD on July 23, 1922.
She attended Springfield Teachers College attaining a teacher’s certificate and taught school until her marriage. Isabelle married A. Kenneth Smith on March 31, 1945 in Mitchell, SD and was the “farmer’s wife” until his death in 1985. They had five children together. Having her for their mother was a privilege and an honor. She raised her family with love, home cooking and lead by example. Conflict was shunned, but tolerance was abundant. Her door was always open to family and friends. She was the greatest cook and shared her secrets with her family.
Isabelle willingly volunteered her time with her church, Zion Lutheran Church, being involved in Altar Guild, Lutheran Women Missionary League and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed playing bridge for many years of her life. Kenny and Isabelle played couples bridge with friends during their marriage. Later she played bridge with girlfriends.
Isabelle is survived by her sons, Jerry (Patti) Smith and Dale (Anne) Smith both from Mitchell, SD; daughters, Kay Baker, Sturgeon Bay, WI and Diane (Dave) Drake, Colman, SD and daughter-in-law, Barb Smith, Mitchell, SD. Grandma Belle has thirteen grandchildren: Teresa (Dennis) Schley, Jennifer (Brad) Fisher, Adam (Jody) Smith, Gina (Kevin) Jensen, Denise (Tom) Shields, Lori (Jason) Schmit, Kara (Brandon) Stange, Rocky (Mindi) Smith, Zak (Sarah) Baker, Andrew (Jaime) Baker, Holly (George) Boggs, Trina (Kyle) Chaudoir, Kristen Drake; and twenty-three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Carol Paulson, Wyoming and Vera (Bill) Hanna, Iowa; her brother, Wayne Jaton, California; and her sister-in-law, Doris Jaton, Sioux Falls.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenny; her son, Craig; her parents and siblings: Florence Young, LaVerna Heisinger, Glen Jaton, Norma Stahl, Eugene Jaton, and Sylvia Larson.
