Kathleen "Kathy" Carol Roster
DatesDecember 5, 1938 - February 6, 2016
Kathleen Carol Roster was born on December 5, 1938 the 9th of 10 children, to James and Frances K (Woll) Burke at Jefferson, SD. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956. She then attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD. She graduated with an Associate Degree in secretarial and accounting. After graduation she worked in the Trust Department at First National Bank in Sioux Falls, SD. She played 2nd base for Locke Electric’s Fast Pitch softball team and was a member of their state championship team in 1960. While playing for Locke Electric she became friends with Cindy Schoepf who set up a blind date for Kathy with her boyfriend, Lawrence Roster’s, twin brother, Ed. She and Edward T. Roster were united in marriage on September 16, 1961 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson, SD. The Roster’s purchased a farm from Alvin and Mable Tuggle and made it their home. They raised their crops, hogs and cattle. They passed on their love of farming to their 5 children and 7 grandchildren. They enjoyed attending their children’s and grandchildren’s concerts, contests and sports events. She took pride in all of their accomplishments. Having lost her father at the age of 13, the closeness of family was very important to her.
Kathy was an active member of the St. Peters Altar Society in Farmer, SD, was a CCD teacher for many years and member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. She was also an active member of the Fulton, Farmer and Epiphany American Legion Auxiliary. Ed and Kathy attended many state legion conventions with their friends: the Pommers, Steilens, Schladweilers, Slades, Soladays and Beatches. Together this fun loving group created many wonderful memories and raised their children to love their country, its veterans and that faith, family and friends are important and those bonds should be nurtured. She also maintained a life-long friendship with the Presentation Sisters in Aberdeen. She was extremely thankful to all those who became her friends thru the years and stayed in contact with many.
Kathleen is survived by her husband, Ed; children: Susan Tucker of Salem, Carmelita Roster of Farmer, Angela Roster of Monett, MO, Wayne (Monica) Roster of Farmer and Alice (Rich) Newsam of Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Robert, Jessica and Christina Tucker, Rebecca and Justin Roster, Nicholas and Elizabeth Newsam; siblings: Alice Dusenbery of Van Buren, MO, Patricia (Howard) Beermann of LaGrange, IL, Martin (Mary) Burke of Sioux City, IA, Charles (Beverly) Burke of Dallas, OR and Daniel Burke of Casa Grande, AZ; sister-in-law, Wanda Burke of Petaluma, CA; brothers-in-law: Donald Roster of Mitchell and Lawrence (Cynthia) Roster of Spencer, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alice and family I'm sending my thoughts and prayers your way. I can't believe we won't have our "band mother" keeping an eye on us. Well, at least not in person, but she will be watching from above. A great lady who will be sadly missed by so many. Love and prayers to all of you.

We remember Kathy well and her many kindnesses, especially to our mutual friend, Sr. Carmelita. We know her Sister Joyce and Mother Carmelita welcomed her home in the community of saints. Our prayers for Kathy's family with her sudden death but surely after the rosary and before Mass is a comfort. Peace and love of our Gentle Jesus and Mother Mary be with you all.

To Ma Roster, I'll never forget how extremely nice you were to me and what great kids you raised. You always treated me as if I was one of your own. Your time on earth was cut way to short, but clearly you were needed upstairs. My thoughts and prayers to the rest of your family.
