Evelyn “Maxine” Miller was born on July 25, 1926 in Wessington Springs, SD to Fred and Mathilda (Maschman) Mohling. Maxine grew up on her parent’s farm in Jerauld County and graduated from Wessington Springs High School and then Wessington Springs Junior College in 1945. She taught at rural Jerauld and Aurora County schools and for many years was the Business Manager for the White Lake Public Schools. Maxine was joined in marriage to Luther “Barney” Miller on June 24, 1949 and they made their home in White Lake.
Maxine was baptized into the Christian faith and was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in White Lake. She was a founding member of the local Town and Country Club of White Lake and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Max and Barney loved to dance and she also followed in her father’s footsteps as an avid oil painter.
Maxine is survived by her son, Gregory and wife, Nannette of Overland Park, KS; daughter, Laura Ann Beeman and husband, Bryan of Rowlett, TX; and son-in-law, Roger Horstmeyer of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren: Geoffrey Miller and wife, Shara; Zachary Miller and wife, Dara; Robin Weiner and husband, Tom; Katie Jo Davis and husband, Michael; Brook Horstmeyer and wife, Darcie and Allison Bolin, six great grandchildren are Carson, Peyton, and Lydia Sue Weiner, Elias and Taetum Sue Horstmeyer and Remi Sloan Miller, sisters: Alice Villbrandt and Phyllis Mohling of Wessington Springs, Dorothy Wickre of Fargo and sister-in-law, Alma Mohling of Wessington Springs.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Barney; daughter, Sue Lynn Horstmeyer; her parents; brothers: Wilfred and Kenneth Mohling, sister, Eileen Swanson and brother-in-law, Dale Swanson, brothers-in-law: Wesley Villbrandt, Edward Wickre and sister-in-law, Beverly Mohling.
