Alvin John Hofer

March 14, 1927 - January 29, 2016

Alvin John Hofer was born at the home of his grandparents on March 14, 1927 in Hutchinson County, SD, to Joe J. and Justina (Wipf) Hofer. He grew up attending schools in McCook County and graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1945. He served proudly in the US Army during World War II and was honorably discharged at Ft. Riley, KS on November 9, 1946. On his way home he met the love of his life, Verna Jean Epp. They were married at Bridgewater on January 26, 1947. They farmed in the Emery and Mitchell area. In 1963 Alvin went into the insurance business, making the President’s Council every year he worked with National Farmers Union. Due to a farming accident in 1984, Alvin retired from the insurance business.  After retirement Alvin enjoyed more time to work at his farms keeping them well kept and restoring his collection of equipment. He loved to take early morning walks and using his rowing machine daily. In his earlier years he loved to play church league softball and with his family and had sponsored and played on a bowling league for many years. Alvin and Verna spent two months in their motorhome for 22 years wintering in Texas where they made many dear friends. He was a 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. His belief in the Lord was amazing and he had a joyous life with great love for family and friends. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Alvin is survived by his wife of sixty nine years Verna; four children: Richard (Diane) Hofer of Mitchell, Althea Hofer of Sioux Falls, Wayne (Marlene) Hofer of Rapid City, Janelle (Daniel) Pederson of Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren: Nicole (Kurtis) Chenoweth, Kathleen (Jon) Mocol, Nathan Hofer, Michael (Deb) Bailey, Jason Rice, Heather (Don Peterson) Winfield, Shannon (Kristi) Hofer, Tyler and Jordan Pederson,  14 great grandchildren: Andrew and Ashley Chenoweth, Joseph, Madelynn, and Jacob Mocol, Amani, Isaiah, Braylen Winfield, Layla Peterson, Brooklyn, Cade and Bryce Bailey and Kayla Jo and Jenna Hofer, four sisters: Mabel Voss of Parkston, Pearl (Duane) Duba of Ethan, Rose Larson of Sioux Falls, Carol (Thomas) Brown of Rapid City; one brother, Wilbert (Thelma) Hofer of Mitchell and a sister-in-law, Norma Hofer of Mitchell.

Verna and family--My deepest sympathy to all of you. I will always remember riding to work with Alvin for a couple of summers when I worked at my first job at Armour Creameries. I also remember playing the piano for him down at "The Hall" when he played his guitar and sang "How Great Thou Art". He was a special neighbor and I'm sure that you miss him very much. God bless you as you mourn his loss, but keep your memories.
