Joyce Marilyn (Nelson) Freeman was born October 11, 1929, to Elvie and Clarence Nelson, at Ashland, Wisconsin. She grew up in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School in 1947. She married Ken Freeman on June 18, 1949, and the two relocated to Mitchell to begin their new life together.
She was a homemaker and stay at home mom for several years before going to work part time at Methodist Hospital in the admissions office. She then went to work for the city of Mitchell in the finance office and retired in 1992. After retirement, Ken and Joyce enjoyed traveling to visit family members and old friends from childhood. They also spent 11 winters in Casa Grande, Arizona, where they met new friends from all over the country and Canada. They enjoyed golfing, trips across the border to Mexico and happy hour with their neighbors.
Her hobbies included golfing, bowling, Bunco Club, painting, camping and attending her children’s school activities.
Survivors include her daughter, Sue (Cal) Strand, her sons: Dave (Kathie) Freeman, Ron (Paula) Freeman all of Mitchell, and Rick, Sioux Falls, sister, Shirley Mersy, Vista, California, sister-in-law, Bev Searing of Waterford, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and long-time childhood friend, Jeanne Beirl of Ashland, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ken in 2010, her sister, Nancy Fragomini, daughter in law, Tracy Freeman and brothers-in-law, Bud Searing, Frank Mersy and Dominic Fragomini.
