James R. Smith, 68, Port Orange, FL, formerly of Plankinton, SD died Wednesday, November 7, 2007 after suffering a heart attack while on a pheasant hunting trip in Mitchell, SD.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Regynski officiating, Mitchell.
He was born September 13, 1939 in Yankton, SD. He grew up in Plankinton where he was a multi-sport star at Plankinton High School, where he graduated in 1958. He earned his degree at Northern State College and completed his graduate studies in geo-chemistry and geo-physics at Texas A&M University. He spent over 20 years teaching and coaching high school sports. On August 12, 1964 he married Carol Marek of Mitchell.
Jim will always be remembered for his smile and quick wit. He accomplished many things in life, but nothing was more important to him than his family and serving Jesus Christ. He spent much of his time the past few years traveling the country and evangelizing at motorcycle rallies, as a man who simply liked to be called “Thunder”. His passion was serving others and helping them understand the love of Christ.
He is survived by his three children, Scott Smith of FL; Jim Smith and Trisha McConnell of TN; two sisters, Joyce Cudmore of NE; Judy Johnson of WA and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
