Rolland Wayne Steinberg was born on February 23, 1942 at Brookings, South Dakota to Arthur and Rowena (Dykhouse) Steinberg. His family resided at Salem and Sioux Falls, South Dakota before moving to Cherokee, Iowa, in 1952, when Arthur purchased Dee’s Dairy. Rolland worked with his family at the dairy delivering milk before attending school, as well as helping in other capacities. During this time he developed an interest that turned into a lifetime passion of collecting milk bottles. He loved to find old milk bottles from South Dakota and the surrounding states that contained the dairy’s information. In his 60 plus years of collecting, he amassed a great collection. Collecting milk bottles was not his only passion. He also had a great love of South Dakota and its history, and collected every city and county history that he could find. No one could ever stump him with the location of a town or ghost town in South Dakota. He could even tell you the highways to travel and the approximate distance. He traveled nearly every road in South Dakota during the 42 years that he was employed with Wells Blue Bunny.
Rolland graduated from high school at Cherokee in 1960, and later attended Buena Vista and SDSU before obtaining his degree from Buena Vista at Storm Lake, Iowa. He married Trudy Lee in December of 1964. They divorced in 1997. In 2000 he married Sandra (Hirsch) Hanson.
Together they explored flea markets and antique shops on their travels.
Rolland is survived by his wife, Sandy, Alexandria, SD; sons Dan (Diane) Steinberg, Sioux Falls, SD, and Craig Steinberg, Rapid City, SD; step-sons , Jason (Rita) Hanson, Alexandria, SD, Eric Hanson, Sioux Falls, SD, Adam (Susie) Hanson, Renner, SD; and step-daughter Melinda Hanson, Lombard, IL; eight grandchildren; brothers, Roger (Paulette) Steinberg, Rochester, MN, Blaine (Marianne) Steinberg, Dallas, TX; mother-in-law, Palma Hirsch, Wessington Springs, SD; aunt, Gert Dykhouse, Volga, SD; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
