Gilbert Theodore Schoenfelder was born August 4, 1924, near Kimball, SD to Joseph and Kathryn (Blasius) Schoenfelder. He attended school in Kimball. In 1943 he enlisted in the US Army and received his basic training at Ft. Leavenworth, KS and Camp Butner, NC. He was assigned to the 45th Infantry and served in North Africa and Anzio Beachhead. On May 30, 1944, he was wounded in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Medal. He returned to the US in October 1944 and was honorably discharged in September of 1945. On October 2, 1951, he married Carol Krell in Plankinton, SD. He operated heavy construction equipment, drove truck and was at Rozum Motor Company until he retired. His hobbies included: gun smithing, wood working, working on his sons’ motorcycles, watching Twins baseball and his children.
He was a past commander, volunteer driver and life member of the DAV; a past district commander and life member of the VFW. He was selected by the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce as the 1994 Veteran of the Year. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Carol, Mitchell, his children: Jeanne (Bob) Lorenz, Mitchell; Chuck (Lessie), Boise, ID; Tom (Joyce), Oxford, NE; Ruth (Charles) Anderson, Holcombe, WI; Dennis (Chayne Boutillette), Alamosa, CO; Daniel (Doris), Desert Hills, AZ; Karen Tollefson, Mt. Vernon, SD; Lisa (Steve) Fisher, Sioux Falls, SD; Paul (Lisa), Boise, ID; Siblings: Jim (Joyce), Wenatchee, WA; Jerry (Janice), Martinsville, IN; Kay Isburg, Chamberlain, SD and Barbara (Dale) Britton, Whitney, NE. He has 19 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy Alsgaard; a brother Earl; sister-in-law Shirley Schoenfelder; brother-in-law, Wendell Isburg, and son-in-law, Herb Tollefson.
