Roger E. Barta was born August 25, 1949 in Huron SD to Emmit and Wava (Rogers) Barta. He attended grade school and high school in Artesian, SD—graduating in 1967. He married Elaine Wilson July 30, 1970, in Mitchell, SD.
He graduated from Dakota State College in 1972 and worked for Madison Federal Savings & Loan before moving to Yankton, SD to work for SIC Finance. He later moved to Mitchell to work at Herbergers Department Store. He started teaching accounting and business classes at Mitchell Technical Institute in the fall of 1976 and retired in May of 2004 due to the cancer.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mitchell, Resurgam Lodge #31, where he was the secretary for twenty-three years, El Riad Shrine Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star #41.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his children, Christopher (Karen) Barta, Monticello, MN and Laura Barta, Buffalo, MN; one granddaughter, Emily Barta, Monticello, MN; two sisters, Sonia (Al) Thomas, Pierre, SD, and Lynette (Al) Schmit Kingwood, TX; two brothers LaVern (Geri) Barta, Huron, SD and Lynn (Ronda) Barta, Plano, TX; his mother-in-law, Natalie Wilson, Mitchell, SD; two sister-in-laws: Janette Adams, Alexandria, SD and Amy (Craig) Hildebrand, Mitchell, SD; two brothers-in-law: Dale (Deb) Wilson, Mitchell, SD & Myron Olmsted, Brandon, SD; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dureen Olmsted; father-in-law Clarion Wilson; nephews Douglas Thomas, Bryan Wilson and infant boy Olmsted; and a great-nephew Gabriel Wilson.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
