Fern Marie Jorgensen was born October 24, 1925 at her country home near Mount Vernon, SD to John and Nora (Sorensen) Jorgensen. Fern grew up on the family farm with her sister, Corrine and her two brothers, Clayton and Richard. She attended Mt. Vernon Public school and graduated in 1943. She continued her education at Dakota Wesleyan University where she received her teaching degree. She taught 2nd grade in Parker, SD for two years. She married Wallace Jones the man she loved for 67 years on August, 10, 1947, the hottest day of the summer, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Mt. Vernon. Fern and Wally lived two miles south of Mt. Vernon where they farmed and raised five children. She was an active and longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church where she served on numerous committees and taught Sunday school. Fern loved a good game of Rook or Rummikub. She enjoyed traveling with Wally. She was an avid reader and read to her grandchildren endlessly who she loved with all her heart. Fern loved being with her family especially the many potlucks with her brothers, sisters and their children. She enjoyed a diet soda break with her son and staying up late talking with her daughters when they came home to visit.
Fern is survived by her loving husband, Charles (Wally); her children: Laura Gerlach, Boise, ID, Ginny (Larry) Storm, Collierville, TN, Janie (Arnie) DeRuyter, Rock Valley, IA, John (Linda) Jones Mount Vernon, SD, Lyndy (Paul) Peterson, Brandon, SD; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, sister-in-law, Mary Henry, Salem, OR, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, one nephew and one granddaughter, Jonalin Jones.
