Obituary

“Our hearts are broken but the fruit of the Spirit lives on.”  Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend Marcella Catherine Bennett was peacefully called home to Heaven Friday, June 26, 2015. She was 92.  Marcella (Bucknell) Bennett, born a twin to Mardella on a farm in rural Alexandria on July 8, 1922 to John and Gertrude (Bowling) Bucknell. She understood the meaning of a strong work ethic.  Growing up during the depression this outdoorsy farm girl loved horses, working in the fields, cooking and canning and developed a lifelong passion for gardening specifically tending and nurturing beautiful flowers; a legacy that lives on in her children, grandchildren, and particularly in her granddaughter, Laurie and great-grandson Lukas.

At the age of eighteen Marcella met the love of her life, Howard Bennett, whom she was united with in marriage on December 21, 1940. To their joy they raised three children, Connie, Ronald, and Bonnie.  During their years together Marcella and Howard dedicated themselves to family and building two businesses in Mitchell – Bennett’s Market and Bennett’s Ben Franklin, which they owned and operated until 1985; five years after Howard’s passing in 1980. Early in their marriage she began working at Saint Joseph Hospital, where she was a committed nurse’s aide for twenty-five years.  Marcella was a classy, honorable lady who became fast friends with all she met and always took the time to help out anyone in need. She had a sharp mind, quick wit, and soft voice, and she never forgot a face. She could wear any hat like no other and was known for her vast collection of signature hats, many of which she wore for every occasion, specifically church.  She was an active member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church and faithfully prayed the rosary every night. In her words, “If I fall asleep during the rosary my guardian angel will finish it for me.”

Grateful for having shared in her life are her three children: Ronald (Ronnie) Bennett, Minneapolis, MN; Connie and Jim Black, Independence, MO; Bonnie and John Messerli, Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren - Laurie Chenoweth and husband Ken, Mitchell, SD; Becky Conway and husband David, Missouri; Joe Black and wife Amy, Missouri; Paul Black, Todd Black, Missouri, and Bob Messerli, Sioux Falls, SD; five great-grandchildren – Lukas Chenoweth, Joey Black, Austin Black, Ian Conway, and Brandon Conway; one brother, Bob Bucknell, Sioux Falls, SD, and sisters Lucy Shultz, Mitchell, SD Lavon Lau, Omaha, NE, and her faithful companion, Katie, her dog.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Howard Bennett; one brother Joseph Bucknell, her twin sister Mardella Turner and sister, Genevieve Fox; three brothers-in-law, Clarence Fox, Bernie Shultz, and Al Lau; sister-in-law Eileen Bucknell, and one nephew James Fox.

Bonnie, Laurie, and family. We were so sad to hear about the loss of your mother and grandmother. Marcela was one of Mitchell's classiest women and the city's history has once again changed - like the days of old Hollywood. You are all in my thoughts.

Sally was my godmother and a special aunt. So many wonderful memories and fun times with my cousins at her house and stores. She will be missed so much. She is also responsible for getting me my first dog against my parents' better judgment. She was such a tiny puppy they never thought she would live but she did to a ripe old age. Thanks, Sally!!
