Millard Lennon Senska was born September 17, 1917 in Sanborn County, SD to Harry Glen Senska and Lura (Walrath) Senska. He passed away on June 25, 2015 at Prairie View Care Center, Woonsocket, SD under hospice care.
Millard grew up in a large family--fishing in the creek; hunting for frogs; racing to the dinner table (before the food was gone); walking to school or catching a ride in the neighbor’s horse and wagon (on a lucky day). He lived through the depression, dirty thirties, two world wars and rationing, the Korean War and Vietnam conflict.
Millard graduated from Forestburg High School in 1936. He attended auto body and paint school in Kansas City. He did not work in that field as there were no paint rooms then and you would spit out paint at the end of the day from the inhaled fumes.
Millard returned to Sanborn County and started farming--working for Sherman Judy and living on the acreage now known as the Brakke farm. He had fallen in love with another Forestburg student and married Selma Larson on May 26, 1940. Three children were born to this union--Keith, Carol and Susan. Later he and Selma moved to what became their life-long home in Jackson Township north of Forestburg. Millard spent his life working the soil and raising cattle and other livestock.
When Millard was retirement age he still loved field work; however, he began golfing, reading books and playing cards in his spare time. He loved his shop and fixing things. He restored two tractors, a John Deere 1951 Model B (which remains shedded on the family farm quarter now owned by grandson, Stacy and wife, Ivy) and a 1946 Farmall H International, which he bought new (grandson Scott now has).
In 1986, Selma and Millard became “snow birds” for the first time and began what became an annual pilgrimage to Desert Sun Condos in Apache Junction, Arizona. This was perfect as they had family and friends in both locations. Millard continued to live in both South Dakota and Arizona until February, 2013.
Millard was a long time member of Forestburg Lutheran Church. Millard “formally” retired from the farm in 2010 and moved to Woonsocket until he moved to Countryside Living in 2013. He became a resident of PVVC on June 9th, 2015.
He is survived by his children, Keith (Barb) Senska of Woonsocket; Carol (Tom) Schade of Phoenix, AZ; Susan (Jim) Johannsen of Artesian; sister, Glenda Thompson; sisters-in-law: Phyllis (Ed) Senska, Phyllis (Boyd) Buehler and Dianna (Dean) Senska; brother-in-law, Lewis (Bonnie Rose) Larson; six grandchildren, Brenda (Scott) Adams, Stacy (Ivy) Senska, Scott (Sarah) Senska, Laura (Lance) Conrad, Sara (Tim) Cutler, and Eric (Julie) Johannsen, and sixteen great grandchildren.
Millard was preceded in death by his wife, Selma, on June 21, 2001; his parents Glen and Lura; his siblings, Eldon, Boyd, Dean, Ed, Lynn, Donald, and Baby Senska.
