Obituary

 

Joseph Martin Matthews was born April 22, 1933 at Artesian, SD to Alfred and Jennie (Shirk) Matthews. He attended elementary school and graduated from Woonsocket High School. He served in the US Air Force from 1951 until 1959 where he was an aircraft mechanic. On March 1, 1959 he married Minnie Joann Albers. He was employed by Mitchell Concrete for 56 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed NASCAR racing and working with the stock car racing pit crew for his brother, Jim.  His was a lifetime member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Minnie; two children: Jimmy Joe (Penny) Matthews, Pukwana, and JoLae (Terrance) Semmler, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren: Crispin, Austin, Rachel, Joden and Ashton; three sisters: Thelma Johnson, Whitewood, Jean Liddeke, Tucson, AZ and Dorothy (Leroy) Degen, Mitchell; one brother, John (Monica) Matthews, Beeville, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James and Jerome, and sisters: Edith Hanten, Laura Flowers and Katherine (Kitty) Wittenhagen.
