Leonard Arthur Schleder was born December 11, 1922 on the Schleder homestead in northeastern Brule County to John and Emma (Eckstein) Schleder. Leonard attended grade school in Plummer Township. He farmed with his parents until they moved to town in 1946 and Leonard continued to farm until 1975. He married Emily Rose Jacobs on March 20, 1946 on the Jacobs’ farm in Brule County. To this union were born three sons: Douglas, Dennis and Dale. Leonard and Emily lived on the Schleder homestead in Plummer Township, Brule County for twenty-nine years.
In 1975 they moved to Mitchell and became the Davison County Jailers until 1996. After Leonard had a heart attack, he retired. He then took to planting five hundred to six hundred tomato plants in the yard every spring. He enjoyed working with the plants and giving the tomatoes away. He also loved to play cards at the James Valley Community Center and with family and friends. Leonard helped raise a grandson and a granddaughter. He liked being around his family. He had been a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimball, was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell and the James Valley Community Center. Leonard moved from his home to Firesteel Healthcare Center in March 2008 and resided there until his death.
He is survived by two sons: Douglas Schleder and wife, Barb of Pukwana, SD, and Dale of Springfield, SD; five grandchildren: Duane, DeYonn, Dennis Jr., Derek and Darcy; five great-grandchildren: Christopher, Gabriella, Caden, Derek Jr., and Alexis; a sister-in-law, Vesta Sebesta, Fort Collins, CO and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily in 2007; a son, Dennis in 2005; his parents, a brother, Earl; a sister, Dorothy Miller, a great granddaughter, Chole and two brothers-in-law, Harold Sebesta and Henry Miller.
