Obituary

 

 

Raymond John Schmit was born December 29, 1929 at the family homestead southeast of Artesian to Michael and Louise (Kersch) Schmit. He moved with his family to Pukwana, SD where he attended his first years of schooling.  During the dirty thirties they moved back to Artesian and graduated from Artesian High School in 1949. In 1951 he joined the US Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1955 following the Korean War. On April 30, 1957 he married Eva Cote.  They were involved in farming south of Artesian.  He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, served on the Artesian School Board for eight years, the Union Township Board for thirty-six years, the VFW and was a member of the American Legion Post #55 for fifty-eight years.

 Happy to have shared in his life are, his wife, Eva; three children: Linda and husband, Larry Hostler of Mount Vernon, Roger and wife, Cheryl Schmit of Artesian, Carol and husband, Mark Hinker of Mitchell;  nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Travis Hostler, Carena and husband, Tim Jarding and daughter Mercedes, Kenny Hostler, Heidi and husband, Bob Berg and sons, Quinton and Landon, Willie Hinker, Cote Hinker, Haley Hinker, Ashley Schmit and Austin Schmit; two sisters: Angie and husband, Damen Eining, Agatha and husband, Don Ebersdorfer of Artesian; one brother, George and wife, Lavonne Schmit of Mitchell; a brother-in-law, Clarence Stratman of Mitchell.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Martha Stratman and an infant brother, Michael.

Grandpa,
I know you are reading this so I wanted to tell you that I miss you very much. I think about you alot and wonder what you are doing. As Quinton gets older i see alot of you in him. Love you and miss you alot.

Linda and family, we are thinking of you in these times of grief. We will not be able to be there for you, however, we wish we could. As the kids are getting older and growing fast, we have to plan a get together some time soon. Take care - love ya Brad, Donya, Abigail, and Brayden
