Obituary

Loina Evelyn Smith, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother passed away in her sleep December 20, 2014.  She was born August 14, 1929 in the Sand Hills of Nebraska to Harry Steven and Lila Faye (Knight) Fair.  She attended country school and moved to Gordon, Nebraska for high school where she graduated with honors in 1947.  In 1948 she married Donald Eugene Garner.  They were married for twenty-five years and lived in Nebraska and South Dakota.  In 1974 she married Steve Halm.  In 1993 she married Donald Smith.  They shared their lives for seventeen years in Jackson, Minnesota.

We remember her as a country girl.   Her parents were homesteaders and sodbusters that raised cattle and made their living off the land.  She broke horses, branded cattle, churned butter and rode a tractor.  We could easily say there was no one like her.  Her love for nature and God’s creation led her to a life long faith in Jesus.

She was civic and politically minded.  She made an impact wherever she went.  She served as the Co-chair of the Jackson County, Minnesota Republican Party.  And she could be seen walking up the hill every Sunday, with guitar in hand, on her way to the Jackson Good Samaritan Nursing Home.  She was honored at the "Good Sam" for 20 years of volunteer ministry.

She is survived by her children Terry (Takobi) Garner, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dan Garner, Douglas, Wyoming, Randy (Jolene) Garner, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Nila Garner, Eugene, Oregon, Kristi (Corey) Walters, Kaylana (Nathan) Miller, James (Crystal) Halm, Chicago, Illinois, twenty-six grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  Her parents, two siblings, Virginia Moony and Ned Fair and a grandson Tige Garner precede her in death.

She has gone on to glory and has left us a legacy that will carry on for all generations.
