Gladys Eulila DeVelder, 92, of New Ulm, MN went to her eternal peace surrounded by her family on Saturday, the 6th of December, 2014 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm, MN.
Gladys was born May 25, 1922 in Plankinton, SD to Richard and Alida (Donker) Jansen. She graduated from Corsica High School. Gladys married Marion DeVelder on April 25, 1941 and farmed near Corsica before later moving to Parkston SD, Sibley IA, Oelwein IA, and eventually retiring to Mitchell, SD. Gladys moved to New Ulm, MN, after the passing of her husband.
Gladys was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church of Mitchell, where she served as a deaconess as well as a member of the choir. She attended Our Savior’s Lutheran Church while living in New Ulm.
Gladys enjoyed many hobbies and pursued a variety of interests. She was a dedicated community volunteer, offering countless hours to the church, senior citizens, and various other organizations. Gladys had a great love for music, whether listening to it, singing it, or playing it on piano. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilt-maker. Gladys also enjoyed baking and particularly loved making cinnamon rolls for her grandchildren.
Gladys is survived by her children Gary (Carol) DeVelder of Chandler, AZ, Sharon (Cal) Andersen of Mitchell, SD, Craig (Karen) DeVelder of Aurora, CO and Donn (Barb) DeVelder of New Ulm, MN. She also is survived by 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Nell Welch of Banning, CA; brother-in-law, Jack Foss of Roseville, CA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion; sister Alida; brothers: Richard and Leland; brother-in-law, John Welch; and sister-in-law, Rose Jansen.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Abounding Service Ministry, an organization founded by Gladys's son Gary which is dedicated to helping refugees learn English, are preferred. Services will be held at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, SD
