Obituary

 

Marvin E. Mathis was born May 19, 1924 to Irving Mathis and Jennie (Hemminger) Mathis near Letcher, SD.  He obtained the age of 90 years, 6 months and 8 days.

On July 14, 1949 he married Frances Schelske in Mitchell SD.  They lived and farmed north of Mount Vernon until retiring to Mitchell in 1982.  After retirement, Marvin worked in Mitchell for Dakota Pork for a number of years and for the Porter family.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served both as an usher and a deacon.  He also was involved with the Gideons.  While farming he was involved with the Farm Bureau and served on the board in different capacities.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; son, Gary Mathis of Sioux Falls; four daughters:  Sherry (Dwight) Gerlach of Corsica, Shirley (Robert) Rippe of Brookings, Gerry Maths of Mitchell and Priscilla (Dave) Emmert of Mitchell; one brother, Delbert (Flo) Mathis of Illinois and one sister-in-law, Elaine Mathis of Watertown; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his brothers: Charlie (infant), Vern Sr. and Ivan; brothers-in-law:  Paul Ness, Bernard Schelske; sisters-in-law:  Mavis Mathis, Pearl Mathis, Agnes Hendrickson, Leatta Ness and Elnora Von Verdo; and son-in-law, William Busekist Jr.

 

 

 

Memorials may be directed to the Mitchell Presbyterian Church

or the Gideons.
