Fern Edna Jenks was born on November 8, 1917 at home in Aurora County, SD, to Carl and Augusta (Wieczorek) Plamp. She attended a rural school in the country, graduating from the 8th grade. On November 12, 1935, Fern married Charles Emery Jenks at Hillside Lutheran Church, rural Dimock. She and Emery farmed for many years on various farms in Davison County. They then purchased a farm in rural Davison County raising their four children and residing there until Charles’s death in July of 1980. Fern moved to Mitchell and worked at various jobs. She was a cook at Randall’s, was employed at Kress Drug and was a custodian at the Mitchell Middle School. She also ran the Mitchell Sale Barn Café for several years until her retirement.
She was an active member of the Women of the Moose for several years and enjoyed traveling with her friends to WOTM activities. She was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.
Fern is survived by her children: Shirley (Marvin) Baumgartel of Mitchell, SD; Phyllis Pietz of Rapid City, SD; Ronald (Mary) Jenks of Baltic, SD; Donald (Marla) Jenks of Tripp, SD; twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her sister-in-law, Viola Jenks of Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her husband Emery, two brothers, Harold Plamp and Milford Plamp, two sisters, Hildegarde Bindert and Virginia Thompson, an infant son, two granddaughters, Julie Heid and Deb Napier, her parents and her father and mother-in-law, Albert and Clara Jenks.
