Joan Mary Schulte was born October 15, 1948 to Andrew and Eva (Garry) Schulte in Mitchell, SD. She grew up on a farm south of Emery, and graduated from Emery High School. Joan married Leonard Berg on January 10, 1967, and they farmed together near Emery.
Joan cherished her family. She shared her love of cooking and sewing with her children and grandchildren. Joan was dedicated to church and community. She was very active in St. Martin’s Catholic Church where she taught catechism for over 30 years, served on the Sacred Heart League and Parish Council, and constructed costumes for the Christmas Program that are still used today. Joan contributed to numerous community and school activities over the years, and along with her husband Leonard, was chosen to be the Emery Homecoming Grand Marshal in 2005.
Survivors include her husband Leonard, four children Steve (Susan) Berg, Linda Nagel (Mike), Kevin (Emily) Berg, and Gretchen Berg, eight grandchildren (Samantha Nagel, Brandon Berg, Lindsey Berg, Lucas Berg, Charlie Berg, Tommy Berg, Sadie Berg, and Holly Berg), one sister Nancy (Larry) Weber, nine brothers, Robert (Linda) Schulte, Kenneth (Linda) Schulte, Charles (Bonnie) Schulte, Richard (Julie) Schulte, George (Brenda) Schulte, Martin Schulte, Dennis (Carol) Schulte, Garry (Judy) Schulte, and Nick (Lori) Schulte, brothers-in-law Eugene (Karen) Berg and Larry Berg, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva and Andrew Schulte, and sister-in-law Anita Berg.
