Jason “Jas” Martin was born on June 30, 1983 in Herrin, IL to Kris Sloan and Kevin Martin and was later adopted by Bill Sloan. He grew up in Alexandria, SD and graduated from Hanson High School in 2001.
Jason enlisted with the Marines on February 11, 2002. He joined 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines on August 29, 2002, where he served as an Administration Clerk. On May 5, 2004 he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he was awarded the Combat Action ribbon for several engagements with the enemy. While in Salerno he was a guard at the ECP where he performed CPR on a local national, which resulted in his life being saved. He returned from Afghanistan on December 5, 2004. He served with the Marines until October 2, 2006. Jason married Anna Larson on May 12, 2012 in Mitchell.
Jason shared his life with his wife, Anna; four children: Sean, Summer and Shadlee Sloan all of Parkston, Cadence Kogel of Huron; adopted father, Bill Sloan, biological father, Kevin Martin; two brothers: Jamie (Lyndsyae) Sloan and Daniel Sloan both of Mitchell; grandmother, Mina Isakson, Corsica; aunts and uncles: Greg Isakson, Corsica; Larry (Cheryl) McCarrey, IL, Larry Sloan, MI, Jerry (Joyce) Sloan, MN, Helen (Dave) Parr, Sioux Falls, Nancy (Don) Scott, Plankinton, sister-in-law, Sarah Larson and boyfriend, Logan Knippling, Wessington Springs; one niece, Clara Sloan, Mitchell; one nephew, Damien Knippling of Wessington Springs; mother-in-law, Luz Larson, Greenville, SC, and father-in-law, Roger Larson, Wessington Springs, one cousin, Amber Kohn, IL.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Kris Sloan, grandfather, Enoch Isakson, two uncles, Harold Isakson, Richard Sloan and his best friend, Kris Whaley.
