Merlyn Ranco Swyter was born July 15, 1936 in Mitchell to Ranco and Grace (Kinns) Swyter. He spent his entire life in Emery and graduated from Emery High School in 1954.  In his younger years, Merle was a Boy Scout, a newspaper delivery boy, a life guard at Lake Hanson and a volunteer fireman. He served in the South Dakota Army National Guard.  On February 2, 1955 he married his high school sweetheart, Rosanna Osterloo. Merle was a member of the Emery Businessman’s Club for many years, operating Merle’s TV in Emery and Sioux Falls, television sales and service business and Swyter Oil Company, a bulk fuel delivery business. Later he worked for the Emery School and at Mitchell Technical Institute as a maintenance man until his retirement.  He enjoyed woodworking, genealogy and many family projects.  Sunrises and sunsets were special photo moments Merle enjoyed throughout his life.  He especially loved camping with his grandkids.
