Marlys Marilyn Stirling was born on February 9, 1930 to Julius and Magdelena (Wieger) Rath in Tripp SD. She attended school and graduated from Parkston Public High School. She married James W. Stirling on August 30, 1948 in the Sacred Heart Church in Parkston SD.
Marlys enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening and general farm life. Marlys and Jim farmed in the Mount Vernon and Alexandria areas and moved to Parkston in 1956 where they farmed until retiring to Mitchell in 2004. They were members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Parkston and the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell since 2004. She was a member of the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and the Farm Bureau.
She is survived by her husband, James, Mitchell; three sons: Thomas (Cheryl) Stirling, Ethan SD, Dennis, Parkston SD and Daniel, Sioux Falls SD; two sisters: Joyce (Dan) Quinn and Carol Rath, both of Sioux Falls SD; one brother, John Rath, Arizona; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Jerome Rath, two sisters-in-law: Betty Rath and Judy Rath, and two brothers-in-law: Kenneth Stirling and Joseph Roth Jr.
