Obituary

Cletus John Mohnen was born on March 11, 1922 to Mathias and Ida (Liebrech) Mohnen in White Lake SD.  He grew up on a farm south of White Lake.  He attended Saint Peter’s Parochial School for eight years and graduated from White Lake High School in 1940.

He farmed all of his life until retiring and moving into White Lake in 1994.  He then worked at Cenex Coop part time and in his spare time he restored old tractors of which he had several.  He moved into the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake in 2011 and to the Platte Care Center in 2014.  He enjoyed traveling to different places and states.  He was a 4-H leader for ten years and served on the Gales Township Board for over 40 years.

He married Elma Glissendorf on June 21, 1945 in White Lake.  They lived southwest of White Lake on a farm until retiring and moving to town in 1994.

He loved to raise percheron horses and would take them to town for sleigh rides.

He is survived by his wife, Elma; three children:  Paula (Art) Hinzman, Lakebay WA; Gloria (Dave) Kok, Platte SD, Tom (Linda) Mohnen, Newcastle WY; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Ida; three sisters:  Marie Bruns, Roberta Grant and Genevieve Grant in infancy; one brother, Norbert Mohnen; one sister-in-law; five brothers-in-law; four grandsons and one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established to the South Dakota Tractor Museum in Kimball SD which Cletus was very active in establishing or to the Compassionate Care Hospice.
