Obituary

Linda Theresa Schuman was born on October 27, 1956 to Jack and Geraldine (Tanner) Baart in Fairbanks, Alaska.  Linda grew and up and attended school in Alaska.  She graduated from Ben Eielson High School at Eielson AFB AK in 1974 and received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks in 1982.  She worked for various professional accounting and computer employment business from 1980-1985.

Linda learned to cook as a child and loved to invent new recipes until MS prevented her from this passion.  She also learned to cross-stich, sew, knit and crochet and created many projects for her friends, family and co-workers using these skills honed over her childhood and early adult life.  Growing up in Alaska she loved to fly fish, ice fish and go camping.  She married John Schuman on February 17, 1977 in Fairbanks AK.  After her marriage to John she thoroughly enjoyed clam digging along the Cook Inlet, king salmon fishing on the Gulkana River, fly fishing on any river for arctic grayling, dipping for Copper River sockeyes and participating in the home butchering of moose, caribou and dall sheep.  Her garden and flower growing talents were spectacular.  There were few if any vegetables she couldn’t grow and fresh flowers were always in the house during the short Alaska growing season.  Many of the vegetables from Linda’s garden and wild berries that were gathered from far and wide were also used as bases for various homemade wines that Linda created from her imagination after MS overcame her ability to walk.  Linda’s promising career was cut short after her MS diagnosis in 1984 and despite being wheel chair bound since 1991 she contributed all she could to help out whoever she could through her verbal instructions as well as her limited physical capabilities.  Linda was always adept at board and card games and after her wheelchair became her mode of travel, she became even more talented in winning games using her mind to out play her opponents but never gloating over her wins which were most of the time.  Her one enduring feature which she kept until near the very end was her beautiful smile.  Not blessed with children, Linda enjoyed her pets including numerous parakeets and zebra finches tropical fish, one dog and two cats over her lifetime.  Her courage and perseverance shown under the under the adverse life she led impressed all who knew her.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Parish, North Pole AK from 1977-2005 and also St. Peter’s Parish in White Lake from 2005-2014.

Linda is survived by her husband, John of White Lake; her mom, Geraldine Baart- Abbl of Fairbanks, AK, and one brother, Van Baart or Salcha AK.  She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.
