Fern Lucille Hanssen was born March 31, 1928 at Emery SD, to Engelbert and Gertrude (Terveen) Browen. She grew up and attended country school near Emery. On March 14, 1950 she married Lawrence Hanssen. They farmed for a brief time before moving to Askov MN. In 1956 they returned to Emery where they farmed until they retired in 1993. She drove a transportation van for BNSF Railroad for many years, worked in housekeeping at the Thunderbird Lodge, Super 8 Motel and worked as a waitress at the Tomahawk and Rosebud Cafés. She married Calvin Hanssen on August 22, 2009 at Emery. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Emery.
Fern is survived by her husband, Calvin, two sons: Terry (Cindy) Hanssen and Gene Hanssen both of Emery SD; one daughter, Pat (Jack) Karber of Pierre SD; two step-sons: Ronald (Debbie) Hanssen of Lennox SD and Richard Hanssen of Emery; three step-daughters: Sharon (Phil) Crider of Sioux Falls SD, Joyce (Bruce) Olson of Lennox SD; Barb (Gary) Buse of Lennox SD; one sister, Deloris Klinger of Sioux Falls SD; one brother, Robert (Sharon) Browen of Salem SD; six sisters-in-law: Arleen Browen of Sioux Falls SD, Patricia Krier of Idaho, Rosemary Skarset of Sioux Falls SD, Dorene Hanssen of Sioux Falls SD, Bernetta Browen of Cambridge MN, Luella Browen of Sioux Falls SD; three brothers-in-law: Milton (Marlys) Hanssen of Sioux Falls SD, Chuck (Joann) Hanssen of Sioux Falls SD, Lester Fluth of Cambridge MN; twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, thirteen step-grandchildren and fourteen step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence, six brothers: Lawrance, Leroy, Raymond, Harold, Luverne, Myron; two sisters: Bernice and Eldora; one sister-in-law, Jeanette, one brother-in-law, Delayne, one step-daughter, Dianne and two great-grandchildren, Lawrence Karber and Kirra Karber.
