Nikki Porter

June 29, 1954 - June 9, 2018

On June 9th, 2018, the life of the kind and beautiful soul of Nikki Porter ended at age 63. She passed away at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD after a brief but life changing diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer.

She was at peace knowing she was ready to meet her God and be set free from pain. She left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten and her death will not be in vain. Nikki was an angel among us and now she is an angel watching over us.

She was born June 29th, 1954 in Sioux Falls, SD to Dwane and Margie (Wax) Dirkson. Nikki was a caregiver and always knew she wanted to be a nurse. She began volunteering as a Candy Striper at Sioux Valley Hospital as a young teen. She graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School in 1972 and went on to attend the University of South Dakota’s Nursing program. She moved to Mitchell in 1975 and began working as a nurse at Methodist Hospital. Jim and Nikki were married in February 1977 at Zion Lutheran Church.

Over the years she continued her education by receiving her Bachelors of Nursing degree from South Dakota State University in 1987 and became a Certified Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health in 1995. She worked as the Director of Mitchell Women’s Health Center and then as a Certified Nurse Practitioner at Dakota Women’s Clinic until 2009. In 2010 she joined the family business at Porter Distributing. During the 90’s she and Jim were also Owners/Operators of JCW Clothing Company in Mitchell and Sioux Falls.

It was important for her to give back to the community she raised her family in. Over the years she was a board member of or volunteer for many organizations including St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Mitchell YWCA, Abbott House, Mitchell Safe House, Mitchell Main Street and Beyond, Beta Sigma Phi, Mitchell Exchange Club, South Dakota State Nursing Board and more.

One of her biggest joys in life was being a mom and grandma. Her kids and grandkids meant the world to her. She loved to plan holidays, family dinners, projects and crafts with the grandkids, and vacations to make sure we all made time to make memories together. There was a never a moment we doubted how lucky we were to have her as our family rock.

Grateful for sharing in her life are her husband, Jim. Her mother, Margie Dirkson. Daughters, Christina Luna (Mark) and Kirbie (Eric Wilson) and son, Drew (Trena). Her brother, Guy (Kathy) and sister, Gaylene Guimond (Joe). Her eight grandchildren Aislinn, Ryann, Stori, Cael, Cruz, Denton, Declynn & Brooks. She was preceded in death by her father Dwane Dirkson.

We know Nikki touched so many in the Mitchell community. The family has planned a private prayer service. To celebrate her life, we invite you to share your memories and laughter with Nikki’s family and friends at the Lake House on Saturday, June 23, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you make a donation in honor of Nikki to Mitchell Weekend Snack Pack program online at or by mail to 1200 W University Ave, Mitchell, SD (605-995-2838).

Nikki took me under her wing at first as her patient, then as a fellow nurse, and always as a strong shoulder when anyone needed it. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't remember what grade Nikki and I were in when we first met, but I know we were friends for over 55 years. So many memories--riding our bikes to Terrace Park swimming pool on hot summer afternoons, walking downtown to Woolworth's lunch counter for a Coke and French fries with lots of ketchup, and, of course, all those summers spent at the cabin on Lake Madison. Wonderful memories of a wonderful friend whom I will miss deeply. Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

I met this special lady when we first worked together at the Methodist Hospital. I then got the privilege to work with her again at Dakota Women’s Clinic. She taught me so much about a lot of things, but especially what a person should be like in this world. She was one of the most caring people I knew & many times I wished I could be more like her. The world has lost a wonderful person & I’ll miss this dear friend. You’ll always be in my memories. My deepest sympathy to Jim & the whole family..

I got to know Nikki working with her at Dakota Women's Clinic. She cared deeply for each patient and was very easy to work for. Family was very important to her and her stories about her grandkids were so priceless. We can't even imagine the deep pain and emptiness you are all feeling but know she left a piece of herself in each of you. What a great asset she was to her family, friends, patients and community. They all meant a lot to her and she will be deeply missed.
