Lorna Braught, 78, of Mitchell, died Monday, June 11, 2018 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Mitchell First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Lorna Rosella Braught was born September 5, 1939 to Timon J. and Laura (Noble) Oltmans in Mobridge, SD. Early schooling was at Lemmon, Belle Fourche and Spearfish, SD. She attended Macalester College, Saint Paul, MN, and received a degree in religious education, vocal and pipe organ performance. She toured with the select Little Choir with Ian Morton. She was the chapel organist while at Macalester and organist at Dayton Avenue Presbyterian Church. She taught at Worland, Wyoming from 1962 through 1965 and at Mitchell Public Schools from 1963 through 1964.
Lorna married Arnold Braught in Spearfish on June 23, 1963. Their daughter Wendy was born on February 15, 1965 and son Timothy was born on July 20, 1968.
Lorna was the church organist at Mitchell UCC Congregational from 1963 to 1968 and at the First United Methodist church from 1980 to the present, accompanying choirs and special music. She was organ accompanist for Handel’s Messiah and Vivaldi Gloria performances. She was a charter member of the Circuit Ringers handbell choir and is credited with selecting the Circuit Ringer’s name. She was also a trombone player and keyboardist in the Jubilee Brass Quintet. As a soprano soloist, Lorna was featured in various oratorios, including Dakota Chorale, Middle Border Chorus, and Madrigal Singers. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists. She was a 50-year plus member and past president of N and BK chapters of the PEO.
She is survived by her husband Arnold Braught; son Tim Braught; daughter Wendy Braught; grandchildren, Laura, twins Reed and Rachel, Christopher, Aren, Emily; and a great-grandson Easton.
