Dorothy Brown, 82, Spencer, SD died Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, March 3 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Emery. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery at Farmer, SD. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm on Friday with a scripture service at 7:00 pm at St. Martin Catholic Church. Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.

Dorothy Ann Brown was born December 24, 1935 in Farmer, SD to Nick and Mary (Schladweiler) Steilen. She graduated Valedictorian from Farmer High School in Farmer in 1953. On April 23, 1956 she married Donald Brown. Dorothy farmed alongside of Donald for many years. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Farmer, where she actively served with the Altar Society, church choir and FFE Auxiliary. She most recently was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Emery. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and volunteered for the Avera Hospice Program. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and spending time with family. Her faith was very important to her. She always had positive words of encouragement and will always be remembered for telling her grandchildren to “love one another.”

Grateful for her life are her five children: Sandra Bartscher of Emery; Judy (John) Paradeis of Alliance, NE; Vicki Yttreness of Sioux Falls; Dan (Debbie) Brown and Tim (Lisa) Brown of Spencer; 19 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, sister, Julie Wagner of Salem; sister-in-law, Cathy Brown of Longmont, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald, grandson, Kirby Bartscher, son-in-law, Boyd Bartscher, great grandson, Preston Barnhouse, sisters: Rose Thompson, Loretta Anton, brothers: Edward, Herb, Clarence, Bernard, brother-in-law, Joe Brown and father and mother-in-law, LeRoy and Mildred Brown.
