Edward Theodore Roster and his twin, Lawrence, were born to Matt and Catherine (Lahr) Roster on October 16, 1932 at their farm north of Farmer, South Dakota.

Ed graduated from Farmer High School in 1951.  He was a life-long resident of Hanson County where he celebrated his love of the land by farming.  He served in Korea as a member of the Army’s 231st Truck Battalion from September 1952 to October 1954.   After he returned home he joined his dad and brother’s farming operation.  He met his future wife on a blind date arranged by Lawrence and Lawrence’s girlfriend Cynthia Schoepf.

Edward T. Roster and Kathleen C. Burke were united in marriage on September 16, 1961 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson, SD.  The Rosters purchased a farm from Alvin and Mable Tuggle near Farmer and made it their home.  This is where they raised their crops, hogs and cattle and passed on their love of farming to their five children and seven grandchildren.   Ed and Kathy enjoyed attending their children’s and grandchildren’s concerts, contests and sports events.  They also took great pride in all of their accomplishments.

Ed served on the Jasper Township board for many years, was a seed dealer for Epley Seeds, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  He was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Farmer and volunteered to help whenever it was need.  He passed on his volunteer spirit and commitment to family, faith and country to his children. Ed was an active member of the Fulton, Farmer and Epiphany American Legion Post, holding every office at least once and some multiple times.  He also served as the District Americanism Chairman for many years.  Ed and Kathy attended many district legion meetings, mid-winter conferences and countless state legion conventions making many friends around the state.

Edward is survived by his children Susan Tucker of Mitchell, Carmelita Roster of Farmer, Angela Roster of Monnet MO, Wayne (Monica) Roster of Farmer and Alice (Rich) Newsam of Fargo ND, grandchildren, Robert, Jessica and Christina Tucker, Rebecca and Justin Roster, Nicholas and Elizabeth Newsam;  brothers Donald of Mitchell and Lawrence (Cynthia) of Spencer, In-laws Alice Dusenbery of Van Buren, MO, Howard & Patricia Beermann of LaGrange IL, Martin & Mary Burke of Sioux City, IA, Charles and Beverly Burke of Dallas OR and Daniel Burke of Casa Grande AZ and many nieces and nephews.
