George Bittner

GEORGE BITTNER graduated from Greensburg High School in Greensburg, PA,  Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, and the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science.  George is a veteran of the US Marine Corps.  He was employed at Halsted & Co Funeral Directors in San Francisco, the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, Milliken Funeral Home in Mitchell and has owned the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell since 1979.


Active in the community for many years, he has served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club and the Middle Border Museum. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Methodist Hospital, Queen of Peace Hospital, Dakota Wesleyan University and Wesley Acres.  He was one of the originators of the local Cancer Walk. George is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and the South Dakota Funeral  Directors Association and currently is president of District II.  Also, George is a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, Moose Lodge, the American Legion, Exchange Club and serves on the Mitchell Airport Board.  He received the Dakota Wesleyan University Young Alumnus of the Year Award and was selected to participate in the Rotary International Group Study Exchange to England.  Since 1981 he has served as Davison County Coroner and he also serves as the Hanson County Coroner.


He is married to Michele Bittner and they have a son, Brett who resides in Sioux Falls, SD.
